About this project

AI Plant Classifier – Desert Plants of the UAE

Objective: Build an AI model that can classify common desert plants found in the UAE.

Context: Identifying native plants supports environmental awareness and conservation efforts, especially in arid regions like the UAE where biodiversity is unique and fragile.

What you'll build: You will research and select 3-5 local desert plants, gather clear images, and use Teachable Machine to train an image classification model. The project involves testing the model and explaining its decision-making process, combining research, observation, and AI skills.

Deliverables: A trained plant classifier model, a demonstration of its accuracy, and a short explanation of your approach.

Milestones
1. Research and choose 3–5 desert plants
5 marks 2d
Select 3 to 5 distinct desert plant species native to the UAE. List their scientific and common names, and include a brief description (1-2 sentences) of each plant's key identifying features. Submit this list as a clearly formatted document or table.
2. Collect or find clear plant images
5 marks 2d
Gather at least 10 high-quality, well-lit images for each chosen plant species, ensuring images show different angles and backgrounds. Organize the images into labeled folders by species and submit them in a shared drive or as a compressed archive. Verify all images are clear and relevant to the selected plants.
3. Train model using Teachable Machine
5 marks 2d
Upload your labeled plant images into Google Teachable Machine and train a classification model with separate classes for each species. Submit screenshots of your training process and the final trained model's summary, ensuring each class is represented and the model completes training without errors.
4. Test model and explain how it works
5 marks 2d
Test your trained model with at least 2 new images per species that were not used in training. Submit a brief explanation (3-5 sentences) describing how the model makes predictions, supported by screenshots of your test results showing correct and incorrect classifications.
